As of 2010, The Reptile Zoo is in Toronto and offering outreach programs to schools, camps, libraries, nursery schools, private and catholic schools, etc. Our new facility in Toronto allows us to be very competitive with pricing and also allows us to have a zero mileage fee. We are able to accommodate large groups and small groups, just as we have been doing for years. If you like us to visit your school we have unsurpassed curriculum based education programs for all grade levels.
Indian River Reptile Zoo is proud to be Canada's only accredited reptile zoo! We are also Canada's largest reptile zoo, and are equipped with state of the art facilities including quality, climate controlled enclosures.
OUR MISSION:
...To reach as many people as possible with our message about the importance of reptiles in our ecosystem! We offer exciting, educational, and interactive programs which are designed to captivate specific audiences and provide a unique hands-on experience with some of natures most misunderstood animals. Our goal is to dispel the myths and legends surrounding reptiles by teaching students and adults the value of these fascinating creatures through interesting facts and lots of audience participation!
As part of our "Outreach Program" we would like to work with you to create an enjoyable and memorable event at your location!
Why Choose Indian River Reptile Zoo?
Indian River Reptile Zoo is a recognized zoological institution and is the only reptile zoo in all of Canada to be accredited by CAZA (The Canadian Association of Zoological Parks & Aquariums). This means that Indian River Reptile Zoo has achieved all requirements needed to attain official recognized zoo status. Being CAZA accredited we are exempt from the by-laws governing exotic animals, including those of the city of Toronto. This allows us to legally display animals in public settings for educational purposes. We are the only reptile zoo in Canada allowed this privilege.
We are also Canada's only non-profit reptile zoo which is resistered as a charity 80522 2253 RR0001
Indian River Reptile Zoo takes all precautions to provide the safest atmosphere both during daily zoo functions and outreach events. Those animals that are venomous are housed in specifically designed reptile enclosures and remain as display animals only. It should be noted that although many feel it is unnecessary, Indian River Reptile Zoo is fully stocked in all anti-snakebite serum for all our display animals. Our skilled public speakers will provide an educational experience that will excite and entertain people of all ages!!
...More about us!
In addition to our outreach program, we have an amazing facility that the public can visit from May to October! Here we breed endangered species and adopt reptiles that need a home, many of whom were rescued from unbelievable situations! We also work with Canada's Government to educate Federal Wildlife Officers about reptile identification, safety & handling and first aid. Other organizations that we work closely with include the SPCA, Humane Societies and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.
What about insurance?
Indian River Reptile Zoo is fully insured, and would be pleased to provide proof of insurance upon request.
What age group would a reptile show be appropriate for?
Any & all! Indian River Reptile Zoo can tailor a presentation to suit the needs of any audience! We can adjust the length, style and content to best convey our message to any age group, while still teaching in an entertaining manner. Throughout the year we bring our reptiles to hundreds of schools (nursery schools to high schools), daycares, long term care facilities, birthday parties, family reunions, resorts, and more! We even take the reptiles to places such as malls, museums and the Ontario Science Centre.
How far do you travel with the reptiles?
For over 15 years, Indian River Reptile Zoo has provided courteous and professional demonstrations all over southern Ontario. In some cases, there may be a small fee for mileage, but if the client wishes to book several shows on the same day, or several shows over a few days, this fee can often be waived. These specifics can be worked out at the time of booking.
This all sounds fantastic! How much does a show like this cost?
The price depends on things such as the length of the presentation, as well as the number of audience members. Your Outreach Representative will be able to provide you with a list of prices for your type of organization (for example, schools.) If you decide to book multiple shows, we would be happy to give you a deal! The revenue generated by the Outreach Program is put towards the care of the animals and also enables us to continue to build enclosures for the rescued animals that we adopt.
I saw an animal that I think is really neat at your zoo/show. Can I buy it?
We are a zoo, not a pet store! We do not sell animals. Many people fall in love with the animals that they meet at our presentations but it is important to remember that even though they are beautiful and fascinating, wild animals have very special needs and proper care of them requires specific knowledge and husbandry. In most cases it is even against the law to keep them as a pet. The animals that we will introduce you to are amazing, but the best place for them to be is either in their natural habitat or at an accredited zoo.
